Val and Dave LaHart
Dr. Dave and Val LaHart are retired environmental educators. Val spent 30 years in the classroom and Dr. Dave spent his years working with teachers all over Florida. They were married at the lighthouse so it holds a very special spot in their hearts.
They spent many enjoyable hours fishing from a battered old canoe, walking the trails and taking pictures of most anything that was appealing. They return every year to celebrate their love for each other and St. Marks.
Dave, a wildlife biologist, spent many hours wading in pools and flooded timber with refuge biologist Red Giddons getting first-hand knowledge of this ecosystem. It is very special because of the special people as well.
The Coast Guard turned the lighthouse over to St. Marks Refuge and the “Friends” began the awesome task of renovating the lighthouse keeper’s house. The detailed and era-specific work included window sills to window glass to refurbishing the floor and adding touches from the actual era with lighthouse keeper’s memorabilia. Dozens of people spent hundreds of hours helping with the restoration. The LaHarts wanted to contribute to this community effort.
When the lighthouse re-opened, the LaHarts were “captivated” with the attention to detail and craftsmanship. When the “Friends” needed support to rebuild and replace the lighthouse lens Dave and Val stepped up to the plate.
How else to support this magnificent structure?
